Franz Schubert’s move to bustling Vienna marked a significant turning point in his life – alongside a quantitatively and qualitatively impressive creative burst, the talented Austrian also gained a wide circle of friends and like-minded people in the metropolis full of life’s temptations. The initially shy young man soon became the life and soul of the party and, despite balancing on the brink of poverty, regularly held lively soirées surrounded by good friends, great music, and refreshing drinks. Over time, this tradition became known as the “Schubertiade” and has continued for more than two centuries, well beyond the walls of the cozy salons of the Austrian capital. In this programme, the romantic’s heart and mind-soothing musical collaboration is continued by two brilliant Latvian artists – Reinis Zariņš, master of the black and white keys and deeply personal interpretations, and Zanda Švēde, soloist at the Frankfurt Opera, blessed with a suggestive mezzo-soprano. Apart from Schubert’s outstanding vocal lyrics – gems such as Gretchen am Spinnrade (Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel) and Die Forelle (The Trout), as well as songs from the collection Schwanengesang (Swan Song) – their attention is focused on other notable gems of Viennese chamber music. These include the emotionally captivating works of the late Romantic composer Gustav Mahler from the vocal collections Rückert Lieder (Songs after Rückert) and Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy’s Magic Horn), and Johannes Brahms’ airy and virtuoso piano intermezzos, which harmonise beautifully with the strikingly imaginative miniatures arranged in Robert Schumann’s cycle Kreisleriana.
