Fausto Romitelli Professor Bad Trip
Pierre Boulez Dérive 2
The founder and long-standing artistic director of Sinfonietta Rīga, Normunds Šnē can certainly be considered as one of the most passionate and courageous contemporary music champions in Latvia. Thanks to his generous, visionary outlook, our cultural space, like a blast of fresh air, first experienced musical opuses that before had seemed out of reach. Musical collectives, founded by Šnē, have always had a big role in these creative endeavours - be it Riga Festival Orchestra, the predecessor of State Chamber Orchestra Sinfonietta Rīga, established in 2006, or Riga Chamber Musicians. On 11 April our programme will focus on two masterpieces of the past century's musical visionaries: Dérive 2 by the legendary French avant-garde composer Pierre Boulez, and Professor Bad Trip by Italian contemporary music rebel Fausto Romitelli. The former, considered Boulez's last composition, was began already in 1988 but acquired its final mesmerizing form almost two decades later; the truly impressive work gains its momentum from the ideas of periodicity and derivation. In its turn, Romitelli's masterpiece, written at the end of the past millennium, confirms that the talent of the composer who was taken too soon, laid in his ability to melt together seemingly incompatible things - not only was he was absorbed in avant-garde, spectral and electronic music discoveries, but also passionate about science-fiction and pop-culture news, literary and visual art experiments, techno and psychedelic rock.
